About Adisham Bungalow

Adisham Bungalow is a remarkably well-preserved English country manor built in 1931 by tea planter Sir Thomas Villiers above Haputale at 1,500m altitude, modelled on his family home in Kent, England. After Villiers' death the property was acquired by Benedictine monks in 1961 and converted into a monastery; it remains an active religious community today. The manor is open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday afternoons only (1:30pm–4:30pm), and the entrance fee (approximately LKR 250) admits visitors to the ground floor rooms, the formal English garden, and the monastery shop where monks sell homemade jams, wine, and cordials using fruit from the garden. The building itself, with its original Tudor-style stonework, oak-panelled interiors, and open fireplaces, is one of the most complete examples of early 20th-century colonial domestic architecture remaining in Sri Lanka.
