Lipton's Seat is one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated viewpoints, perched at 1,970m above the Dambetenne Tea Estate in Haputale, Badulla District. Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea magnate whose brand became synonymous with Ceylon tea worldwide, rode his horse to this precise point to survey his vast estate and plan operations each morning. On clear days the panorama extends from the central highlands to the southern coastline, roughly 70km distant. The road to the summit winds through outstanding tea scenery, past women in bright saris plucking leaves by hand — scenes unchanged since Lipton's era. Cloud rolls in predictably by 9am most days, so an early start is not optional: arrive at the viewpoint by 8am at the latest. Tuk-tuks from Haputale town can reach the summit for approximately LKR 1,500 return.
Arrive at the viewpoint by 8:00am — cloud cover is almost certain after 9am
Hire a tuk-tuk from Haputale town for the 12km ascent (approximately LKR 1,500 return)
The tea estate road is steepest in the final 3km — solo cyclists should note this
Best time of day: 6:00am–8:30am (before cloud)
