Diyaluma Falls near Koslanda in Badulla District drops 171 metres in a single unbroken plunge, making it the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The falls can be viewed from below via a flat 10-minute walk for photographs of the full cascade against the jungle hillside, or hiked to the top via a 45-minute trail through forest and past smaller cascades. The summit rewards the climb with a series of natural rock pools carved by the Punagala Oya stream into the granite plateau — clear natural infinity pools looking out over the valley, ideal for swimming and rest. The surrounding montane forest holds rare birdlife and endemic butterflies. Visit between October and December for peak water volume after the northeast monsoon feeds the stream above.
The summit hike (45 minutes) is worth the effort for the rock pools
Water volume peaks October–December; the falls can be a trickle in dry months (March–April)
Wear shoes with grip — the trail to the summit crosses wet stream crossings
Best time of day: October–December (post-monsoon peak flow)
