Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is a well-established hire vehicle in Sri Lanka, listed by operators including Asia Fleet Lanka, Casons, Malkey, VIP Travels, and Shineway. Common generations in the local fleet span the RE (2001 to 2006), RM (2012 to 2016), and RW (2017 onwards) series, with the newer RW bringing a 1.5L turbo engine and a 560 L boot. All are right-hand drive Japanese or UK imports.

Ground clearance sits at around 185 mm — enough above sedans and the Vezel to give more security on mountain sealed roads and occasionally rough secondary roads. The CR-V is not a true off-roader; the 4WD system (where fitted) is primarily for traction on slippery tarmac, not for deep tracks. Safari park roads inside Yala or Wilpattu are not suitable.

Five seats with a genuinely spacious rear bench — 3 adults sit without compromise on the longer generation models. The boot (560 L in the RW, around 490 L in older RE/RM) holds 3 standard suitcases and carry-ons. For a family of 4 on a multi-day circuit including hill country, this is a practical and comfortable option at a sensible price.
