Motorbike / Scooter (Self-Drive)

Self-drive hire by the day in Ella, Mirissa, Arugam Bay, and Galle. The only way to explore tea estate back roads, waterfalls, and viewpoints entirely on your own schedule.

About This Vehicle

Motorbike and scooter rentals are widely available in Sri Lanka's main tourist towns — Ella, Mirissa, Arugam Bay, Unawatuna, and Galle Fort. Common models include the Honda CB125, Honda CB150R, Bajaj Pulsar 150, and TVS Apache for manual bikes; the Honda Activa is the standard automatic scooter for flat coastal riding. A 150 cc manual bike handles Ella's hill gradients better than a scooter; the Activa is sufficient on flat coastal roads.

This is a self-drive category — no driver is included. An international driving licence endorsed for motorcycles is required. Traffic drives on the left in Sri Lanka. Helmets are provided and legally required. Fuel runs about USD 2 to 3 per day and is paid separately. Roads in tourist areas are generally in fair condition, but potholes and stray animals are common, especially after dark.

Best suited to experienced riders comfortable with left-hand traffic and mixed road conditions. Not appropriate for first-time riders, families with children, or anyone carrying more than a daypack. For those with the licence and experience, a motorbike is the most direct route to the viewpoints, waterfalls, and tea estate paths that no four-wheel vehicle reaches.
