Tuk-Tuk (Three-Wheeler)

The tuk-tuk is everywhere on Sri Lankan roads and the right call for any short, local, in-town journey. Bajaj RE and TVS King are the two dominant makes. Both carry up to 3 passengers and navigate lanes and alleys that no car can enter. The open sides are not a flaw — they are the reason to choose one. You hear the street, smell the temple incense, and stop wherever you want without hunting for a turning space.

Good for: Galle Fort circuits, Kandy city and the Temple of the Tooth approach roads, Ella town and its nearby cafes, Colombo's Pettah market, Unawatuna and Mirissa beachfront. A full dedicated day hire covers everything within about 30 km of your base. Most drivers speak working English and know the local shortcuts, food stalls, and viewpoints that do not appear on any map.

Firm limits: not permitted on expressways, not practical on inter-city highway stretches, and there is no boot space. Rain rolls in through the open sides — curtains help but the experience suffers. Use a tuk-tuk for town exploration; use a car or van for transfers between cities.
