Pedro Tea Estate's factory has processed tea since 1885 and still runs much of its original 19th-century machinery, a short 3.5-kilometre drive east of Nuwara Eliya town on the road to Kandapola. Guides lead a 20-minute walkthrough of the withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying floors, explaining each stage of turning raw leaf into graded tea, and the tour ends with a tasting and a small shop selling the estate's own tea. The factory makes a delicate high-grown tea that is only processed at night in cool conditions, so daytime visitors see the machinery and layout more than the tea itself in motion. Entry costs a small fixed fee per person, and photography is not permitted inside the working production floor, only in the surrounding tea fields.
Visit between 8am-12:30pm or 2pm-5pm; the factory closes for a midday break.
Photography is not permitted inside the working production floor.
Production runs mainly at night, so a daytime tour shows the machinery and process more than tea actually being made.
Best time of day: January to March and June to August, the driest windows in the hill country
