The Full Sri Lanka Arc

Ten days is the sensible minimum for the full arc this route covers: Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the tea country, a safari and one coast. Adding a second coast means two extra transfer days of 5 hours or more, which costs you the two days you were trying to gain. This route does one loop properly instead.

Day 7's afternoon session is included in the route. Day 8 is your call: our default is a relaxed morning and a comfortable two-to-two-and-a-half-hour coast transfer. If wildlife is your priority, we happily book the dawn session too; the drive after it is short enough that the day still works. One extra hotel night buys the dawn safari and an unhurried transfer if you want both at full ease.

Partly, honestly. The south coast section is in its monsoon window then, so for July and August we swap the last three days to Arugam Bay on the east coast (3 to 4 hours from Ella), which is in peak season. One trade-off to know: Arugam Bay sits about 6 to 7 hours from Colombo airport, so the summer version ends with either an early-start transfer day or a night near Colombo before your flight; we build in whichever suits your departure time. The Kandy and hill-country days also see more rain in those months; the trip works, it just is not the postcard-dry version December buyers get.

Yala Blocks 1 and 2 close each year for a dry-season rest, typically from around mid-September into October; DWC (the Department of Wildlife Conservation) sets the exact dates annually, so ask us before booking a September or October safari. Blocks 3 to 6 stay open, and Udawalawe (famous for elephants) is a strong alternative in that window. The core December-to-March season this route targets is unaffected.

The route works for families: driving days are short by design, and the bases all have family-friendly stays. Two honest notes: the whale boat is a 3-to-5-hour open-ocean trip that not every small child enjoys, and we recommend skipping roadside turtle hatcheries, many of which operate as commercial attractions rather than conservation projects. It fits well. Colombo is a short hop from South India and a few hours from the northern hubs, so day one still gets you to Sigiriya by evening; tell us your arrival time and we set the first drive around it. Indian passport holders still apply for the ETA before travel, though the fee itself is currently waived, and SAARC nationals get reduced rates at several sites, including the Temple of the Sacred Tooth; confirm the exact SAARC price at the counter.
