Seven days is enough for one route done well, and this one leans into that: two full nights at Sigiriya and two at Nuwara Eliya with Horton Plains built in is already a comfortable week's worth of driving. If you would rather work the coast into a 7-day trip, we build that shape too, just at a faster pace through the hills: our Classic Ceylon route keeps Sigiriya, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya and still reaches Galle by day six, and the Sigiriya, Tea Country and Coast Honeymoon trades Horton Plains for two nights at Mirissa. What does not fit into seven days is this route's unhurried pace plus a real beach stay on top; that combination is what the 10-day version is for.

Not fully, as of September 2026. The famous Kandy to Ella line is only partially open after 2025 cyclone damage: the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella stretch runs, but there is no through train from Kandy. That ride fits the Ella-based variation of this trip, not the default Nuwara Eliya route below: on the Ella variant your driver takes you to Nanu Oya with the luggage, you ride the remaining scenic stretch, and the car meets you in Ella for the night. On the default route there is no Ella night, so taking this train would mean an extra out-and-back leg. Sri Lanka Railways publishes line-restoration updates at railway.gov.lk.

Budget roughly US$50-80 per person per day mid-range for rooms, meals and local transport, plus entry fees (the table above) and your car and driver. One honest caveat: between 20 December and February, room rates on popular routes run 30-40% higher, and the Christmas-to-early-January window can double them. Early December is noticeably calmer and cheaper.

This route uses Nuwara Eliya because it is the only version where every driving day stays comfortably inside our 4.5-hour daily limit, including the trip back for your flight. Ella works too and has its own draws (Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak), but it adds a second long transfer day and a tighter run to the airport; we build it gladly for travellers who accept that trade.

Honestly: only with compromises. Five days forces the hill-country visit and the airport return into the same day, which only works with a late-afternoon or evening flight and leaves no buffer. If you have 5 days, we usually suggest either dropping the hill country for a Cultural Triangle and Kandy loop, or accepting the tight final day with the right flight time. Yes, with two honest adjustments. Sigiriya's climb is about 1,200 uneven steps on an exposed staircase; children over six or seven usually manage it before the heat, and Pidurangala next door is the shorter scramble if not. The Horton Plains walk is a 9.5km loop at altitude that starts pre-dawn, which is a lot for younger children; we swap it for a tea factory morning and Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya, and no other day on this route needs changing.
