Sri Lanka Itinerary: 12 Days - Family Adventure

Two-night stays almost everywhere make this work with children. Habarana opens with elephant safaris and cycle rides past village lakes. Kandy and Nuwara Eliya add the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, a tea factory and evenings cool enough for a jumper. The Nanu Oya to Ella train is the part children remember, and Galle Fort's car-free streets are made for evening wandering. No transfer between stays runs much past three hours.

The journey, day by day

  1. Habarana

Land and drive to Habarana, a small town between two national parks, about 4 hours with a lunch stop. Evening free.

    Bandaranaike AirportHabarana162.4 km · 4-5 h · A3, A6passing Negombo (lagoon town), Kurunegala (rock-and-lake town), Dambulla (Dambulla Cave Temple)
  2. Habarana, at your pace

A morning bicycle ride around the village lake, then an afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla, whichever park the elephant herds favour that week.

  3. Kandy

Sigiriya as an adventure story: frescoes, the mirror wall, the giant lion's paws, and the view from the top. The Dambulla cave temples follow if legs allow.
