About Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks
Minneriya (8,889 hectares) and Kaudulla (6,656 hectares) national parks share an interconnected elephant corridor around ancient reservoirs built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century. Between July and October, as the dry season shrinks the reservoir shallows, up to 300 wild elephants from across the region converge on the exposed grassland to graze, giving rise to what wildlife biologists call the Gathering, one of the largest known wild elephant congregations on earth. Jeep safaris typically run from the Minneriya gate between 3pm and 6pm to catch the peak feeding activity. The parks also support leopard, sloth bear, sambar deer, and a wide range of waterbirds. When water levels at Minneriya are high, rangers redirect jeeps to Kaudulla for better elephant sightings.

Arugam Bay sits on the opposite monsoon to everywhere else in this catalogue. While Colombo, Galle and the south coast are in their wet season, the east coast is dry and breaking cleanly, roughly May to October, with the most consistent swell and offshore wind from June to August. The town has several named breaks within a short ride of each other. Main Point is a powerful right-hand reef break in town that delivers 200 to 500 metre rides for intermediate and advanced surfers. Whiskey Point, 10 to 15 minutes north, is a gentler right-hander. Peanut Farm is a similarly mellow point break over sand and flat rock that works for beginners and advanced surfers alike. Lessons and board rental are booked and paid locally at the beach schools rather than pre-arranged, because that is how the town actually operates, and it means you pick your instructor and change plans day to day. The honest problem with a short Arugam Bay trip is the drive. It is about 8 hours 40 minutes from the airport in one push, and the same back, which on a 6-day trip meant two of six days spent entirely in a car. This version takes seven days and breaks the journey properly instead: a night at Habarana in the Cultural Triangle, a night on the quiet beach at Pasikudah, three nights at Arugam Bay, and a night at Tissamaharama for a Yala safari on the way home. No leg exceeds four hours, you see a coastline most visitors never reach, and you arrive able to surf rather than wrecked.

From around June through October, as the surrounding forest dries out, several hundred elephants converge on the shrinking waterline of Minneriya Tank, an irrigation reservoir King Mahasena built in the 3rd century AD, to graze the fresh grass the receding water exposes. It is one of the largest gatherings of wild Asian elephants anywhere, and it happens because of a 1,700-year-old piece of engineering that still works. When Minneriya's own water drops too far, the herds shift to the connected Kaudulla National Park instead. Which park you actually visit is a call your guide makes on the morning of the drive based on current water levels and elephant reports, not a line fixed in an itinerary months earlier. Both parks are covered. You base at Habarana for two nights and two safari sessions, with Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Dambulla Cave Temple filling the days around them, then finish with a night in Kandy so the trip ends on the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic rather than on a repeat of the road you came in on. Sightings in this window are very good but never guaranteed, and jeep traffic at the tank can get heavy on peak August weekends, so an early departure beats both the heat and the crowd.
