Gal Vihara, carved into a single face of granite bedrock during the reign of King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, contains four distinct Buddha figures of exceptional quality. The ensemble includes a seated Buddha in meditation inside a carved shrine, a smaller seated figure, a 7-metre standing figure with crossed arms in an unusual posture, and a 14-metre reclining Buddha depicting parinirvana (the moment of final liberation). The reclining figure's expression of absolute calm is widely regarded as the finest rock sculpture in South or Southeast Asia. The site was partially excavated from the hillside, meaning the carvings are recessed into the rock face and shaded from direct afternoon sun. Arrive before 9am; midday heat from the exposed granite can be significant.
Remove shoes at the perimeter fence before approaching the carvings.
Photography is allowed but no touching the rock faces.
Arrive before 9am; reflected heat from the granite becomes intense by midday.
Covered by the combined Polonnaruwa ticket (approx USD 25).
Best time of day: Early morning (7am–9am) for comfortable temperatures and softer light on the carvings.
