The journey, day by day

  1. Sigiriya

Land and transfer straight to Sigiriya (about 4 hours via Kurunegala and Dambulla). A travel-only day by design: check in, eat well, sleep off the flight.

    Bandaranaike AirportSigiriya157.5 km · 3.5-5 h · A3, A6passing Negombo (lagoon town), Kurunegala (rock-and-lake town), Dambulla (Dambulla Cave Temple)
  2. Sigiriya, at your pace

Be at Sigiriya for the 7am gate opening and climb the roughly 1,200 steps past the frescoes before the heat builds; Dambulla's painted cave temples fill the afternoon, and Pidurangala at golden hour gives the view back at the rock itself.

  3. Kandy

Kandy is about 2.5 hours away via Matale. The lakeside, the market, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth's evening puja, which runs roughly 6:30 to 8pm.

  5. Nuwara Eliya, at your pace

A pre-dawn start for Horton Plains: World's End, where the plateau drops about 880 metres in one sheer face, clouds over by 9 to 10am, so early is the only version that works. Back by late morning; the afternoon is a row across Gregory Lake or nothing at all.

  6. Ella

The train from Nanu Oya to Ella, about 3 hours through tea estates and mountain tunnels while the car carries the luggage; reserved seats open for booking 30 days ahead and go within hours, so we book the moment dates are fixed.

Ella's day: Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, an easy 1 to 1.5 hour round trip, the Nine Arch Bridge mid-morning, and a long lunch with the valley below.

  8. Udawalawe

Down to Udawalawe, about 2.5 hours via Wellawaya, for an afternoon jeep safari; the park holds one of Sri Lanka's largest resident elephant populations, estimated at more than 500 animals.

  10. Mirissa, at your pace

A dawn whale-watching boat between November and April, blue whales found more mornings than not, or a free day ending with sunset at Coconut Tree Hill.

  11. Bentota

An easy 1.5 hours up the coast to Bentota for the last night: a sunset boat ride where the river meets the sea, dinner by the water.
