Sigiriya to Ella Transfer
From Sigiriya, head south through Dambulla and the Matale valley to Kandy, then climb into the hill country through Nuwara Eliya and tea estates to reach Ella. Allow 4 to 4.5 hours; the hill ascent after Kandy is slow but the scenery is the highlight of the route.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
The route climbs from Ella through the hill country via Welimada and Nuwara Eliya, then descends to Kandy before heading north on the A9 through Matale and Dambulla to Sigiriya. Mountain roads from Ella to Kandy are winding and sometimes slow; the Kandy–Sigiriya leg is faster.
Scenery
Leaving Ella you pass through some of the island's most scenic hill country, tea estates, the famous Nine Arch Bridge (visible from the road), and Ella Gap viewpoints. The road through Nuwara Eliya has high-altitude tea factory scenery before the descent to Kandy. North of Kandy the Matale valley is greener before giving way to dry cultural triangle plains around Dambulla.
★ Travel Tips

- If time allows, stop at Ramboda Falls between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, it is right on the roadside.
- Arrive at Sigiriya by late afternoon so you can climb the rock the following morning at opening time.
