Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and the oldest, covering 1,317 sq km of dry zone forest and scrub in the North Western Province. The park is internationally recognised as having the highest density of Sri Lanka leopard of any protected area in the country, making leopard sightings more reliable here than even in Yala. Wilpattu's defining geographic feature is its 'villus' — natural lake basins filled by rainfall rather than rivers — which shrink in the dry season (March to April) and concentrate elephants, sambhur deer, and other wildlife around the remaining water. The park is also home to sloth bears, spotted deer, jackals, and crocodiles, with good birdwatching including painted stork and purple heron colonies. Wilpattu sees far fewer visitors than Yala, meaning genuinely uncrowded safari conditions. March and April are the best months for leopard sightings as the villus dry and animals concentrate near water sources.
Book a jeep safari through a licensed operator in Hunuwilgama or Puttalam — self-drive is not permitted.
March and April offer the best leopard sightings as the villus shrink and animals concentrate near water.
The park is closed from September 1 to October 15 to allow wildlife recovery — check before travel.
Best time of day: December to April (dry season); March-April for peak leopard sightings
