Negombo to Jaffna Airport Transfer
From Negombo on the west coast, the route heads north through Kurunegala and Dambulla, then continues on the A9 past Anuradhapura and through the Vanni plains to Vavuniya and Kilinochchi. After crossing the Elephant Pass causeway you reach the Jaffna Peninsula and Palaly Airport.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
From Jaffna Airport (Palaly) the road runs south into Jaffna city then picks up the A9 heading south. The route crosses the Elephant Pass causeway and traverses the long, flat Vanni section through Kilinochchi and Vavuniya. South of Anuradhapura the road continues via Dambulla and then southwest on the A6 to Kurunegala. From Kurunegala the routes lead to Colombo and on to Negombo via the E03 expressway. Roads are generally good throughout.
Scenery
The Jaffna Peninsula is low and flat with palmyra palms. The Elephant Pass crossing has lagoon views on both sides. The Vanni is open dry-zone scrub and paddy. After Anuradhapura the Cultural Triangle gives way to more populated lowland areas. Negombo is a coastal town close to the airport with a fishing harbour and lagoon.
★ Travel Tips
- Vavuniya is the best fuel and meal stop on the northern section before entering the Cultural Triangle.
- If arriving at Negombo late, the airport is only 8 km from Negombo town, making this a very short final leg.
- Allow buffer time for the Jaffna city streets between Palaly Airport and the A9 southbound.
⊟ Train Alternative
No direct train connects Jaffna Airport and Negombo. Colombo Fort would require a change, adding many hours.
