Overview
Ceylon Wellness Retreat is a 7-day Ayurveda programme at a single government-registered resort on the south-west coast, built around treatment rather than sightseeing. You stay in one place, see the same physician daily, and follow a diet and treatment plan matched to your dosha.

Day one opens with a consultation and dosha assessment with a Sri Lankan Ayurvedic doctor, who prescribes a daily schedule of clinical procedures: Abhyanga, a synchronised oil massage worked by two therapists; Shirodhara, a steady stream of warm medicated oil across the forehead; Udvartana, a herbal powder massage; and Swedana, herbal steam. Twice-daily yoga runs alongside. Meals are cooked to your dosha and a physician is usually present at mealtimes to answer questions. Alcohol is not part of the programme.
The distinction worth understanding before you book is between this and a resort spa. Sri Lanka's Ayurveda sector is regulated by the Department of Ayurveda, and a certified property is staffed by qualified physicians who assess and adjust your plan daily rather than selling a fixed menu of treatments with pleasant names. Ask for that certification when comparing anywhere, including us.
Route
7 days round trip from Bandaranaike Airport, through Colombo, Beruwala
Places You'll Visit
Day by Day

Day 1
Arrival and consultation
Bandaranaike Airport to the south-west coast
113 km, about 2 hours 15 minutes
Your driver meets you at the airport for the transfer down the coast. Check in, then meet your assigned physician for the initial consultation and dosha assessment that shapes the rest of the week: pulse, constitution, medical history, and what you actually want out of the seven days. A light welcome treatment and your first dosha-matched dinner close the day. This is the last time you touch the car until departure.
- Airport pickup
- Transfer to the resort
- Physician consultation and dosha assessment
- Welcome treatment and first prescribed dinner

Day 2
First full treatment day
At the resort
No driving
The pattern for the week starts here: morning Abhyanga, a synchronised warm-oil massage usually worked by two therapists, followed by Swedana herbal steam to open the pores and carry the oil deeper. Yoga in the afternoon. The gaps between sessions are yours, and the beach is a short walk. The oil stays on the skin for a while by design, so plan swimming around the schedule rather than through it.
- Abhyanga oil massage
- Swedana herbal steam
- Afternoon yoga
- Free beach time between sessions

Day 3
Shirodhara
At the resort
No driving
Shirodhara is the treatment most people come for and the one that looks like nothing: a continuous stream of warm medicated oil poured across the forehead for 30 to 45 minutes. It is Ayurveda's best-known approach to stress and disturbed sleep, and most people find the effect lands hours later rather than during it. Udvartana, a dry herbal powder massage worked against the direction of hair growth, follows. Your physician checks in to see how the first two days have gone.
- Shirodhara
- Udvartana herbal powder massage
- Physician check-in
- Guided meditation

Day 4
The lighter day
At the resort
No driving
Most programmes build a lower-intensity day into the middle, and this is it. Expect gentler treatments, possibly Nasya, a nasal administration of medicated oil, if your physician has prescribed it. A shorter yoga session, and more free time to rest or swim. Do not try to fill this day; it is doing work of its own.
- Nasya, if prescribed
- Shorter yoga session
- Rest or swim
- Optional guided walk

Day 5
The cycle continues, with a review
At the resort, with an optional short local excursion
Local only, if you take the excursion
Your physician reviews progress at the halfway mark and may adjust the plan, which is the part that separates a prescribed programme from a fixed menu. If the revised schedule leaves a lighter afternoon, a short local excursion is possible with the physician's sign-off: a river trip through the mangroves, a turtle hatchery, or the stupa at Kalutara on the way up the coast. The sign-off matters, because some treatments are not meant to be followed by a long day out.
- Treatment per the revised plan
- Physician review
- Optional short local excursion with physician sign-off

Day 6
Final treatment day
At the resort
No driving
The last full day of the programme, with treatments continuing as prescribed. It closes with the consultation that is arguably the most useful hour of the week: what to keep doing at home, which dietary changes actually mattered for your constitution, which stretches to hold on to, and which treatments would be worth a longer visit another year. Write it down; you will not remember it on the plane.
- Final prescribed treatments
- Closing physician consultation
- Take-home diet and lifestyle plan

Day 7
Departure
South-west coast to Bandaranaike Airport
113 km, about 2 hours 15 minutes
A light morning yoga session, checkout, and the transfer back up the coast. Allow the drive plus three hours before an international departure. Physicians usually advise easing back into normal eating over a few days rather than all at once, and your closing consultation will have covered what that means for you specifically.
- Morning yoga
- Checkout
- Transfer to the airport

Before you book
Seven days gives a genuine introduction to Ayurveda medicine, and it is honest to say that it is shorter than the 14 to 21 day cycle Sri Lankan Ayurvedic physicians consider necessary for a full Panchakarma detox. What you should expect is better sleep, lower stress and a reset on diet, not a complete cleanse. Ask your consultant about extending if a deeper course is the goal.
This is the only route in the catalogue with no touring at all. Two transfers, 113 km each way and about 2 hours 15 minutes, bookend six nights in one room. There is no driving between treatments and no packing mid-week, which is the point: the programme depends on daily continuity with the same physician.
Treatments run indoors, so the programme itself works year-round. The season we list is December to March because that is when the south-west coast is dry and the beach between sessions is usable; if outdoor time between treatments does not matter to you, the May to June and October to November monsoon months are quieter and the clinical side is unaffected.
The daily schedule is prescribed, not chosen. If you would rather structure your own days, this is the wrong trip and we would rather tell you now. Treatments are also adjusted for medical history, so tell your physician about any conditions, pregnancy or recent surgery before the first session rather than partway through the week.
Good to know
Is 7 days enough for real results?
It's enough for a genuine introduction, better sleep, less stress, a reset on diet, but it is short of the 14-21 day cycle Ayurvedic physicians generally consider necessary for a full Panchakarma detox. Ask about extending if a deeper cleanse is your goal.
Is this medically supervised or just a spa with Ayurveda branding?
This resort is certified by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda and staffed by qualified physicians who assess and adjust your plan daily, not a fixed spa menu. Confirm certification directly with any resort you compare it against.
Can we drink alcohol or eat off-plan during the week?
Not really, alcohol and food outside your prescribed diet work against the treatment and most resorts discourage it for the week. If that's a dealbreaker, a shorter 3-4 day introductory stay may suit you better than the full 7-day programme.
Are any of the treatments physically uncomfortable?
Some can feel intense, herbal steam and nasal treatments especially, though nothing is forced and your physician adjusts intensity to your tolerance. Tell your physician about any medical conditions, pregnancy or recent surgery before treatments begin.
Can we extend the trip or slow it down?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point: add nights in any city, swap hotels, or slow the pace. Tell us in your enquiry and we shape the route around your dates.
