Hikkaduwa to Ella Transfer
Leaving Hikkaduwa the A2 runs east along the coast through Weligama and Matara before turning inland at Embilipitiya and climbing through the dry zone to Wellawaya and the final ascent into Ella. Allow 3.5 to 4 hours; afternoon departures can be slowed by coastal tourist traffic.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
Descending from Ella via Wellawaya on the A4, then west through Embilipitiya on flatter roads before meeting the southern coast near Matara. The final leg follows the A2 coastal road north past Weligama and Unawatuna to Hikkaduwa. The A2 is two-lane with moderate tourist traffic in season.
Scenery
The first hour drops through dry-zone scrub and paddy leaving the highlands. After Embilipitiya the route crosses the southern lowlands with rubber and coconut plantations. From Matara onwards the A2 runs close to the coast with frequent glimpses of the Indian Ocean, fishing boats, and coral-reef beaches.
★ Travel Tips
- Leave Ella before 8 am to reach the coast before midday and make the most of the beach.
- The A2 between Weligama and Hikkaduwa is busy in the afternoon, stilt-fisherman photo spots cause frequent traffic slowdowns near Weligama.
- Hikkaduwa has several petrol stations; fill up there rather than in Ella where fuel can be limited.
