Jaffna Airport to Sigiriya Transfer

From Jaffna Airport, the 400 km drive south on the A9 takes you through the dry northern plains and cultural triangle to Sigiriya. Allow 7 to 8 hours, with a recommended break in Vavuniya.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

Drive south on the A9 highway from Jaffna Airport through the dry-zone plains to Vavuniya, then continue on the A9/A11 to Habarana and east on the B210 to Sigiriya. Roads are generally good on the A9 but rural towards Sigiriya.

Scenery

Palmyra palm trees and flat scrubland in the north give way to dry-zone forest and occasional ancient irrigation tanks. The final stretch to Sigiriya crosses open cultural triangle terrain with glimpses of jungle.

Travel Tips

  • Vavuniya is the best place to stop for fuel and a meal on this route
  • Elephant crossings are possible on the Habarana–Sigiriya road at dusk, drive carefully
  • The road is faster than it looks: the A9 is well-maintained south of Vavuniya
