Roads
The A1 highway runs flat through the western lowlands as far as Kegalle, then climbs the Kadugannawa Pass into the hills before reaching Kandy. Traffic through the towns can be slow, so the drive takes longer than the distance suggests.
Scenery
Built-up suburbs and paddy country give way to forested hills after Kegalle. Watch for Bible Rock (Bathalegala) on the climb to Kadugannawa. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage near Kegalle is a popular stop.
