Roads
From Nuwara Eliya the road heads southeast through Welimada and descends via Bandarawela to Ella. The hill section is winding and narrow in places with steep gradients. From Ella the road drops sharply to Wellawaya at the edge of the southern lowlands. The Wellawaya to Tissamaharama section is good and relatively flat. From Tissamaharama the road to Yala National Park entrance is about 20 km.
Scenery
Nuwara Eliya to Bandarawela passes through high-altitude tea estates and cloud-touched ridgelines. The descent to Ella is steep with views across the southern lowlands. After Wellawaya the landscape transitions to dry zone, with flat scrubland and paddy replacing the hill-country greenery. Tissamaharama has an ancient tank. Approaching Yala you enter dry scrub with the possibility of roadside wildlife.

- The winding road from Ella down to Wellawaya takes longer than the distance suggests. Allow at least 2.5 hours for the hill section alone.
- Book your Yala safari jeep in advance, especially from December to April when the park is busiest.
- Tissamaharama is the practical base for Yala. Accommodation and meals are available there.
