The descent from Ella passes through forested hillsides and paddy terraces before opening into the flat dry zone around Wellawaya. Further south the road enters the coastal belt near Hambantota, flat scrub and salt pans, then the coastline appears near Matara with beaches and coconut groves stretching to Weligama.
