Mattala Airport to Mirissa Transfer

From Mattala Airport, a short local road connects to the A2 at Hambantota. The highway then follows the south coast west through Tangalle and Matara before arriving at Mirissa, a compact beach town known for whale watching departures.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

Mattala Airport is located about 25 km from Hambantota town. A local road connects the airport to the A2 coastal highway at Hambantota. From Hambantota the A2 runs west along the south coast through Tangalle, Dikwella, and Matara before reaching Mirissa, which sits just west of Matara. The road is in reasonable condition with the usual south-coast two-lane traffic. Tangalle and Matara town centres add time.

Scenery

The airport area is flat scrub at the edge of Hambantota's dry zone. Once on the A2 at Hambantota the south coast highway offers ocean views, fishing villages, and bays. Tangalle has calmer water and a distinctive curved bay. The Dikwella coast is rocky before reaching Matara. Mirissa is a small curved beach just west of Matara.

Travel Tips

  • Mirissa is a well-known whale watching departure point from November to April. Book in advance if your travel falls in that window.
  • Matara town traffic can add 15 to 20 minutes before reaching Mirissa. Allow for it.
  • Mattala Airport has very limited facilities. Arrive from Mirissa with sufficient time before your flight.

Train Alternative

No useful rail connection exists between Mattala Airport and Mirissa. The nearest station is at Matara, and there is no train to the airport.
