Train crossing the hill country near Ella

Adventure route · November to April

Sri Lanka Itinerary: 8 Days - Adventure & Hill Country

A trip for legs and early alarms. Kitulgala's grade 2-3 rapids open it, on the river where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed in 1957. From Hatton, the night climb up Adam's Peak reaches the summit shrine for sunrise; the pilgrimage season runs December to May. Ella adds two days of ridgeline walking, and Weligama's wide bay breaks over a long, gentle sandbar, which is why it's the island's main beach for learning to surf.

Season

November to April

Adam's Peak's pilgrim season runs December to May, when the summit route is lit and busiest at night; outside that window the path is quieter but unlit, so a guide with a torch is worth arranging. Weligama's surf is most consistent November to April.
