Sri Lanka Itinerary: 10 Days - Temple and Heritage Circuit

This route follows Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle temples in the order history built them, before two temple days in Kandy and a Colombo finish. Two Anuradhapura nights allow the sacred city at dawn and Mihintale, where Buddhism arrived in 247 BC, at sunset. Sigiriya's fortress and the Dambulla cave shrines follow, then two Kandy days around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Colombo ends it with Gangaramaya temple and the bazaar streets of Pettah. The journey, day by day

  1. Negombo

    Landing is followed by a short transfer to Negombo, a fishing town near the airport. The evening runs to the lagoon and St. Mary's Church, known for its elaborately painted ceiling.

  2. Anuradhapura

    Anuradhapura is about 3 hours 30 minutes away via Chilaw and Puttalam, passing the turn for Kalpitiya, a lagoon town known for kitesurfing and dolphin watching. The afternoon covers Ruwanwelisaya, a white bell-shaped stupa built in the 2nd century BC, and the Sri Maha Bodhi tree.

  3. Anuradhapura, at your pace

    A full day in the sacred city: Jetavanaramaya, once among the tallest brick structures in the ancient world, and Abhayagiri, a monastery complex that once housed thousands of monks, with Mihintale saved for sunset.

  4. Sigiriya

    The road to Sigiriya via Kekirawa and Dambulla takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, with a stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of five caves with over 150 Buddha statues and painted ceilings dating back to the 1st century BC. The afternoon is free for climbing Pidurangala, a rock opposite Sigiriya with views back across to the fortress, or the fortress itself.

  5. Sigiriya, at your pace

    A day trip to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's medieval capital, runs via Habarana, a small town that serves as a base for two national parks, about 1 hour 45 minutes each way, for the Gal Vihara, four Buddha figures carved from a single granite face, and the Parakrama Samudra, a reservoir built in the 12th century.

  6. Kandy

    The drive to Kandy via Dambulla and Matale takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, with a stop at a spice garden in Matale to see cinnamon, pepper, and cardamom growing. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds its evening puja.

  7. Kandy, at your pace

    The Kandy temple loop covers Embekke and Lankatilaka, a pair of 14th-century temples; Embekke for its carved wooden pillars, Lankatilaka for its stepped stone-and-plaster shrine, a pair of 14th-century temples known for their wood carvings, plus Gadaladeniya, a stone temple built in a South Indian style, and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya.

  8. Colombo

    Kadugannawa and Kegalle carry the road down to Colombo, about 3 hours 35 minutes. The evening belongs to Galle Face Green, the city's seafront promenade.

    Colombo's sacred sites fill the day: Gangaramaya, a Buddhist temple mixing Sri Lankan, Thai, and Chinese architecture, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, a 2,500-year-old temple on the banks of the Kelani River, and the old quarter of Pettah.

  10. Fly home

    The airport transfer runs about 30 minutes on the expressway, for departure.
