Sri Lanka Itinerary: 14 Days - Deep Culture and Ancient Kingdoms
History carries this trip, but it never becomes a forced march. Two nights each at Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Kandy cover the ancient capitals and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth with time to linger, and Polonnaruwa slots in as a day trip. Colombo adds its museums and Pettah's bazaars. Then the coast takes over: Bentota's beach and river, and finally Galle Fort's walls, cafes and lighthouse.

Anuradhapura's sacred city fills the day: Ruwanwelisaya, a white bell-shaped stupa built in the 2nd century BC, Jetavanaramaya, once among the tallest brick structures in the ancient world, the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, and Mihintale, the hilltop site where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC.
Sigiriya
The road to Sigiriya, via Kekirawa and Dambulla, takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, with a stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of painted caves dating to the 1st century BC. Check in for two nights.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress climbs best in the morning light, before a day trip to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's medieval capital, via Habarana, a small town that serves as a safari base for two national parks, about 1 hour 45 minutes each way, for the Gal Vihara rock carvings and the Parakrama Samudra reservoir, built in the 12th century.
Kandy
