Wild elephant kicking up dust in the jungle

Wildlife & Nature route · November to April

Sri Lanka Itinerary: 10 Days - Wildlife, Whales & Rainforest

Sri Lanka packs an unusual spread of wildlife into one small island, and this trip samples all of it. Dry-zone safaris at Minneriya or Kaudulla and at Udawalawe cover the elephants. A guided morning inside Sinharaja, the UNESCO-listed rainforest, goes after endemic birds and purple-faced langurs. Mirissa's dawn boats find blue whales between November and April. Mirissa takes the final two nights: dawn boat trips for blue whales between November and April, or beach time outside that window.

Season

November to April

Whale watching off Mirissa runs best November to April; outside that window the days shift to beach time and the turtle conservation project. Yala's Blocks 1 and 2 close for several weeks from around mid-September most years (dates set annually), so the safari day uses Udawalawe, open year-round.
